doodling since age 6

Since age six

The pen never went down.

John started drawing at six and kept going: in margins, on scraps, on whatever was within reach. Somewhere along the way the doodles grew up into something people wanted to keep.

[Where John grew up, his first drawing memory, the moment he knew this was his thing. Two or three sentences in his words make this section sing.]

He works without a single style or medium, and without rules. If it holds ink or paint, it’s fair game.

Every single morning

“I wake up every day and say to myself: you’re an incredible creator, now CREATE!!!”

John Lee
What he works on

Napkins, rocks and whatever’s nearby.

No single style, no single medium, no rules. Here’s what’s on the table right now.

Two crows on red mushrooms

Napkin drawings

One-of-a-kind, signed, multimedia pen work on whatever napkin was handy.

A crow playing a banjo, painted on a long river stone set in a red twig frame

Painted river rocks

Smooth stones from the river, painted until they’re someone’s new favorite thing.

Digital prints

Drawn on screen with the same scribbly hand, made for walls and gifts.

In three words

How John describes the work

Pensive.

adj. lost in thought, on purpose

Crows watching from the edge of the field. Quiet pieces that look back at you.

Playful.

adj. a red hat on a crow

Knit caps, borrowed flowers, a crow reading to an owl. Nothing too serious.

Whimsical.

adj. mushrooms the size of chairs

Little worlds that feel like the middle of a story you want to know more about.

The crows

Why so many crows?

John draws all kinds of subjects, but he keeps coming back to birds, and to crows above all.

“Their superior intellect, their size, crows and ravens, color, movement and personality and intuitive nature. The freedom of flight is mesmerizing.”
